Happy Earth Day

Last week we had fun celebrating Earth Day. On the Saturday prior to Earth day, we planted two peach trees in our yard, so we are excited for the fall of 2012 to come around so we can hopefully enjoy some lovely peaches. Below is a picture of Matt planing them in our front yard. We are also planting raspberries and I am really hoping they produce this year (which they should) because I LOVE raspberries, but my neighbor has tried raspberries multiple times and they have never taken, so I guess we'll see.

For Family Home Evening the week of Earth Day, we had a good lesson about the earth and our responsibility to take care of it, and then for activity we went and picked up trash along a few streets in our neighborhood. We put a rubber glove on all of us, but almost without fail Cooper would use the hand that did NOT have a glove on it to pick things up. I guess we should have put two on him.
Hopefully our boys learned the importance of taking good care of the earth and not littering. They had so much fun searching for trash, and they really didn't have to look very hard - there was a LOT of trash.

In walking about a block we were able to fill an entire trash bag. In an empty field, we found about 10 bags of hot dog and hamburger buns that hadn't even been opened. It was like someone was going to have a barbecue but then decided not to so they just threw all of the buns in the field.

Afterward we came home and had a fun FHE treat of "dirt" with worms in it, which is the first picture on this post (it wouldn't let me move it for some reason). It's just crushed up oreo's over ice cream with gummy worms in it, but the boys absolutely love it. It was always one of my favorite treats when I was growing up. Overall, it was a wonderful Earth day (or rather Earth week).

Way to go teaching your boys such good lessons! I am proud of you. And Happy Earth Day.

I was thinking about your raspberries. You may want to grab a soil testing kit from the home store and test your soil to see if you can add something to insure your bushes thrive. Good luck!
